Dicussion Worksheet 1 (Young Age Adult)
52% of young adults in US live with parents
8th September 2020
A new study from the Pew Research Center has revealed that most adults under 30 years old are now living with their parents. The study says the number of 18- to 30-year-olds who live at home has hit an 80-year high. Around 52 percent, or 26.6 million, of young people, are at home with one or both of their parents. Researchers say that not since 1940 have so many of the younger generation lived with their parents. Only in the Great Depression of the 1930s was the percentage higher. The researchers say there has been a recent rise in the number of young adults moving back in with their parents. A contributory factor to this spike is the economic downturn and a rise in unemployment caused by coronavirus. Regarding the economy, financial analyst Jeremy Sopko said: "You have to take into account two huge factors: massive student loan debt and a lack of available work." He added: "It's a difficult situation that's been exacerbated by the pandemic and it may take...the better part of a decade for younger demographics to recover and be financially stable enough to leave home." Another commentator said the trend could have adverse effects on the property rental market. She said: "With a lot of young people not renting, not moving into cities...there is a lot of inventory coming onto the market." Mr. Sopko concluded: "For the most part, nobody wants to be living at home with mom and dad."
That is the article from Breaking News English. So, what do you think about everyone should leave the parental home by the age of 21. Should it be done? Let's discuss!
In my personal view, this is not a problem as long as it does not burden parents. It is even better live with parents than to experience deprivation in the outside. However, should a 21-year-old child leave their parents' house? Of course, it would be better if they were able to live independently by living separately from their parents. What do you think guys?
BalasHapusyes sheza, I agree as a child we must be able to learn to live independently because sooner or later we will also feel how we can live independently as well as work, study, and others.
HapusYes, I agree with you sheza, it seems that it is better if we stay with the parents as long as it doesn't become a burden for the parents. Even when living with parents, parents can guide us if something goes wrong and can always keep an eye on the relationship so we don't fall into the trap. However, it would be nice for a 21-year-old child to leave his parent's house so that he can find his identity and independence.

BalasHapusYes that's right baby! This will also make it easier for them to carry out their careers and studies. When they can live independently, of course, parents will also feel proud and not burdened.
HapusI agree with you ely
Hapusbecause adults also have an age limit to reach and adults have to get used to living independently
In my opinion, a child should not leave his parents' house when he is 21 years old. According to applicable law, 18 years is beyond the responsibility of parents. Meanwhile, according to child protection, the responsibility of parents is still up to the age of 21 years or entering adulthood. So, a child who is forced to leave the parent's house because the child's work location is far away or the child chooses to separate himself to make work easier.
BalasHapusHowever, in reality, many children will feel better and free when they can live apart from their parents.
HapusYes. Children are forced to leave their parents' homes because of the demands of work, I think that often happens even in our country.
HapusHowever, at this time more children are leaving their parents' house and looking for a remote work location or maybe the child prefers to separate himself in order to make his work easier. And can form an identity that can make him more independent in dealing with various things that might happen.
HapusFor me, if someone is ready to live alone, then that's ok. because it could be that those who want to live alone want to focus on their life goals. so they don't have to depend on their parents' decisions anymore. Also, by living alone, they are more likely to be able to understand theirselves. But don't forget it will be difficult to live alone during this pandemic due to the difficulty of finding work.
BalasHapusYes Mardha, because of the impact of this pandemic, it is difficult for everyone to get a job
HapusI thought the same thing
HapusRight? We aren't aware that we have been in this pandemic situation for 3 years. I'm still thinking about how to do it if someone wants to live alone without any income?
HapusYes I agree with you mardha. If we are ready to leave our parents' house, it is very good, but it is difficult to get a job right now, especially since there is no work experience and also the impact of the pandemic which makes it difficult for people to find work
HapusIn my personal opinion, in this COVID-19 pandemic, it's only natural that most young people are like that. Because of the conditions that forced them to live with their parents. As we know, many people are laid off from work because of this condition. And when it comes to a person's independence, I think if you have worked and have lived far from your parents, that person is already independent.
BalasHapusThe impact of the pandemic is felt by everyone, there is no work that requires them to return with their parents. This is in line with the level of the economy which is starting to sluggish due to the pandemic. Massive migration from cities to villages (parental homes) has become an economic cycle in urban areas running slowly
HapusI'm agree with you aldi
HapusI think it depends on the child's own will, and the policies of each parent, whether they want to leave the house or not at the age of 21, maybe you can consider several factors such as the economic level of the child or the level of stability of the child, the readiness of the child to be able to live alone, but we need to knowing why children have to leave the house at the age of 21 as parents' opinions differ from children's opinions.
BalasHapusThe age of parents is certainly not the same as the age of the child today. Likewise with the views held by each. The many different views sometimes make children uncomfortable and not free to decide something related to their future. If we have very different views from our parents, it can be a sign that we have to live apart from our parents. But, don't forget to think carefully!
I agree wid! think before you act :)
HapusAgreed, many young adults nowadays are very reckless when making decisions because their mindset isn't mature yet they want to quickly escape from their parents' rules, they're not even thinking about the consequences that will happen in the future.
HapusI totally agree with you widya, we have to think about it carefully
HapusYes, I totally agree with you widya, everyone has a different view. The many different views sometimes make children uncomfortable, confused and feel not free to decide something related to their future. If our views and parents are very different, it would be better if we live apart from our parents. But apart from that we have to think about it again.
HapusIn my opinion, young adulthood is the period that starts around the age of 18 to 22 years and ends at the age of 35 to 40 years. Young adulthood is the most dynamic stage of development throughout the human life span. In young adulthood, a person undergoes many changes – progressive changes physically, cognitively and psychosocially-emotionally, towards a more mature and wiser integration of personality. And when talking about someone's independence, I think you have to work and also live far from your parents, because from there your independence will be formed and then that person can be said to be an independent person.
BalasHapushowever we must be ready to part with parents and live independently. therefore there is nothing wrong if you start to get used to it, so that when the time comes we can live life as adults well.
HapusMy opinion about young adults is I think someone is said to be a young adult when one has passed his youth. So their age range is 18-25 years. which usually starts when you enter college until you finish your education. And many have also built their own lives. Such as being independent, working, married. The benchmark is when they have reached the stage of entering the career ladder.
BalasHapus
HapusWhen you live apart from your parents, you will get a lot of freedom. However, we must also learn to take care of ourselves. Do housework such as cleaning and cooking. We will be able to learn to be more responsible with ourselves.
that's right Ely, at that age someone can be said like that
HapusOften alone will make a person think more clearly and focus. When we live apart from our parents, we will be able to know ourselves better and understand the purpose of life. Without disturbing questions, we will be able to focus more on the things that are our goals in life.
BalasHapusWell, guys.. According to the article, we'll have several words. Lets talk about :
BalasHapusstudy / research / young / adults / home / parents / younger generation / downturn
/ economy / analyst / student loan / debt / pandemic / stable / property rental / cities
I think study refers to paper guys.how about all of you with another word
HapusWhat do you think about study? When I think about the study I suddenly suddenly remembered our learning process during this pandemic. Sometimes we are online but also offline, actually it is quite tiring. We have to spend money for internet quota and gas. Indirectly this makes us spend twice as much money. What do you think?
BalasHapusYash Sheza, i agree!! Apart from the problem of spending double the money. Online learning is also ineffective and lacks explanation from the teacher.
Hapusi agree with you sheza, learning online and offline is quite tiring, we have to spend more money
Hapusstudy is a process of changing a person's personality where the change in behavior is in the form of improving quality, such as increasing knowledge, skills, thinking power, understanding, attitudes, and various other abilities.
BalasHapusand in terms of learning there are problems faced by students in learning for example:
HapusStudents who are unable to achieve learning goals or learning outcomes in accordance with their peers in the same class.
Students experiencing academic delays.
Real students cannot achieve their own abilities.
In my opinion, study is a person's process to become better by getting knowledge from various sources, both from teachers, print media, and electronic media.
BalasHapusyes I agree with you din, now with increasingly sophisticated technology it is easier for us to get knowledge from various sources
HapusI think study is all mental or psychic activities carried out by someone so that it causes changes in behavior that are different between before studies and before studies.
BalasHapusStudy is also defined as a process of change in human personality and the change is shown in the form of increasing the quality and quantity of behavior such as increasing knowledge, attitudes, habits, understanding, skills, thinking power and other abilities.
Oh wow... Your explanation is very detailed! I totally agree with the part where Study is also defined as a process of change in human personality
HapusFor me, study is the act of making an effort to learn by reading, practicing, or memorizing
BalasHapusThen , Home is a a comfort zone. A place to live with our families and pets. A place where you can build memories as well. A place where we can truly just be ourselves. And Pandemic is the worldwide spread of a new disease like COVID-19 that we have faced in the last 3 years.
I see this from two different, even slightly contradictory, points of view. On the one hand, we shouldn't live with our parents in the same house when we are old enough, we should separate from them so that we can stand alone or in other words we learn to be independent. When we are away from our parents, we are required to be versatile, which can make us develop or even be better than before. On the other hand, when we live with our parents, we automatically get a lot of help and assistance, for example we don't need to cook for ourselves and so on... because we are helped a lot, of course we can focus more on getting a lot of work done, but there are drawbacks , one of which is that we are less able to be independent. The two points of view have their respective advantages and disadvantages, so we can't judge which one is better.
BalasHapusI couldn’t agree with you more, Yudha. I'm glad you take multiple points of view.
Hapus
