The beginning of the presence of hallyu aka the Korean wave, in 1997 South Korea experienced a global crisis, causing the value of the South Korean economy to weaken and fall by 7%. This makes the South Korean government look for a way out so that the economy recovers.
The government is trying to rely on the food industry as an alternative route. However, in reality this has not helped the South Korean economy to improve. The South Korean government finally realized that its country was late in modernization. At that time the Asian industrial market was still dominated by cultural products from the United States, Japan and China.
South Korea then tries to export cultural products together with manufactured products and food, then South Korean cultural products are placed together with cultural products from other countries in the Asian Market. Over time, South Korean cultural products are becoming more and more popular.
South Korean culture began to be loved around the 1990s in China. The term Hn li () or Hallyu () was adopted by the Chinese media after the Korean pop music album (H.O.T.) was released in China. In 2002-2005, Korean dramas that were popular in Asia, including Indonesia, included Endless Love, Winter Sonata, Love Story from Harvard, Glass Shoes, Stairway to Heaven, All In, Hotelier, Memories in Bali, and Sorry I Love You. melancholic drama series.
In Indonesia, the existence of Korean dramas is increasingly being accepted by the public. There is also a penchant for Boy Groups and Girl Groups such as from SM Entertainment. Namely TVXQ, Super Junior, Girls' Generation/SNSD and EXO. Singer Rain became known through the drama series Full House which aired on Indonesian television stations. Since then, fans of K-pop and Korean dramas have become common.
South Korean culture can be easily accepted by people whose culture has become a custom that exists in Asia, for example such as harmonious values, community, strong morality, and high respect for family.
The Korean Wave has become a worldwide phenomenon, the effect of which is now not only interest in South Korean culture but also interest in South Korean fashion, culinary, music and film styles.
According to Google Trends data, there are five countries with the most intensive K-Wave distribution, namely Taiwan, Vietnam, Japan, China, Hong Kong and Indonesia. Meanwhile, K-Wave's influence is also seen increasing in the US, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Kazakhstan and India. Even the influence of K-Wave is also becoming known in countries such as France, England, Russia, Uzbekistan and Brazil.
